Examples of Geometric Stimulus Displays
Besides the texture and feature textured displays, we also introduced new types of Avisual search@ displays in these experiments. The geometric display type was overall approximately the same size as the texture displays, but consisted of a 3 x 2 array of larger geometric shapes. This display type was included to see if our previous Same-Different findings using only texture stimuli could be extended to stimuli composed of a smaller number of more widely-spaced elements in which the contrasting difference was defined by a single element (color or shape) rather than a block of elements. The contribution of each of these factors should be to reduce the contributions of low-level perceptual grouping to the discrimination of these sparser displays (Beck, 1966). The identity of the eight colors and eight shapes used to make the Same and Different displays were randomized from trial to trial. These are very close to the size shown to the pigeons.
